Ok, so your GPS was working just fine, however the next time you turned it on, you are shocked to get the following error:

"No Detailed Maps Found that Support Routing. The [GPS] Can Not be Used Without Them"

What does this mean? Did you lose your map?

No, not necessarily. This error is usually attributed to a corrupted directory, corrupted files or corrupted/missing map unlock code. It can also be caused by a missing/deleted map file.

How did it happen? This can happen during the process when maps are being updated. For some reason the map unlock code wasn't written to the Nuvi's drive. Another possibility is that files may have been accidentally erased by the user.

On new units, the unlock code is written into the microprocessor's non-volatile memory and if the memory locations have been corrupted, the code may have been corrupted as well.

The map unlock code consists of a combination of numbers and letters. You should have been given this number when you registered your unit. This code MUST be accessible to your Nuvi in order to unlock the map, each time you turn your unit on.

Please be advised that most people will not be able to resolve this problem themselves and it just takes too much of our time to try to talk someone through the repair procedure. We strongly recommend that you send your unit to us to resolve this problem for you.

If you would like for us to repair this problem for you, I charge $9.95 USD + $10.35 USD return shipping. Return shipping consists of USPS Priority Mail, with $300.00 insurance and Delivery Confirmation.

Please note that we do NOT update maps. Maps are copyrighted material. You must purchase new maps from the manufacturer.

I have copied the gmapprom.unl (with my units unlock code) to the nuvi and still no luck. Basically be better buying another satnav after sussing out the less probmatic type. This is a problem effecting many garmin nuvi owners and a generic fix should be found and available for download from the Garmin site. I'm discusted at such poor support from Garmin but thank you for your time and help.

Sally, Have you verified that the map file is still on your unit? It's called "gmapprom.img".

What year of map was on your unit and what is your unit's internal serial #? This can be found br pressing the wrench symbol at the main menu, then the gear symbol then "about". It's a 10 digit # that starts with the number "3".
