So one day you turned on your GPS and while it was booting it flashed a banner that said, "Upgrading GPS Software". The progress bar only proceeded for a few percent and then stopped. You then reached the main menu but found that your GPS no longer received satellite reception.

What's the problem?

This is unfortunately the infamous "Zombie Mode" or "ZM" for short. What has happened is that for some reason, the main board in your Nuvi can no longer communicate with the GPS receiver board located in the flip-up antenna assembly. When it tries to poll the SIRF chip, it doesn't receive the proper information back.

You can confirm the "Zombie Mode" by pressing the "wrench" symbol on the main menu, then the "gear" symbol on the next screen and then the "about" button. If you see the number "0.0" next to "GPS S/W", your Nuvi has succumbed to the "Zombie Mode".

A working GPS receiver assembly will typically show a numerical value of "2.8", "2.9" or "3.0", depending upon what version of firmware has been loaded into the SIRF chip on the GPS receiver assembly. A value of "0.0" means that there is a problem with the assembly and it will need to be repaired or replaced.

SHARCNET-USA carries an extensive stock of parts to resolve this problem with your unit.
