My StreetPilot 7200 does not respond to the remomte control unit. Are there any test I can do to determine if it is the remote or the 7200?

According to the owners manual (Page 27). Turn the unit off. Press and hold down on the power button (30 seconds) until the calibration screen appears. Follow the calibration by pressing the dots. If the procedure keeps looping, this means your touchscreen has drifted out of tolerance and will need to be replaced.
