Ok, so you decided to upgrade your Nuvi's firmware and you connected it to your PC with the USB to mini-USB cable. You ran the Webupdater program and pulled the cable from the unit.

The unit began to reboot and then all of a sudden you see the message "System Software Missing".

What does this mean? Is my Nuvi now a paperweight?

No, but it may take some effort to get it working again.

First let's discuss how this might have happened. Most likely it happened because the cable was removed while the PC and Nuvi were still communicating. When performing a firmware upgrade, ALWAYS wait at least 30 seconds AFTER webupdater says its finished AND make sure your select to SAFELY REMOVE the drive before pulling the cable. Also ALWAYS make sure your battery is fully charged before performing an upgrade. If the battery dies during the reboot, your unit will lose its mind.

Ok, so how do you fix the problem? Well to make matters worse, you can't just simply reconnect the unit to your PC because most likely the PC will no longer recognize your Nuvi.

If your unit has the file GUPDATE.gcd on it, you'll be able to easily recover from this problem. With the unit off, press and hold down the on/off power button and keep holding it until you see the text "Loader" appear on the screen. Then release the power button and allow the unit to re-flash the GUPDATE.gcd file to your units internal non-volatile memory. It should reboot and operate normally.

If your unit does not have the GUPDATE.gcd file, then you will reach the touchscreen calibration screen that shows a series of dots and you won't be able to easily resolve this problem.

A special program has to be used to reinstall the firmware and your unit has to be placed into PRE-BOOT mode, which forces Windows to recognize your Nuvi.

This program is NOT webupdater and it's not user friendly at all. You also have to have the right firmware file in the right format. I strongly suggest that if you have this problem, to send me your unit to repair.

I can save you hours of headaches and frustration.

Dear unregistered Guest with no name - The program doesn't come with any instructions and you have to have the customized files to use with the program. Save yourself the headache and send us the unit.
