The Nuvi 5000 has a 5.2" diagonal LCD display. The backlight needs sufficient current to fully illuminate it.

If you are powering your Nuvi 5000 from the mini-USB port, you will not be able to achieve full brightness. You must use the car cradle, connected to a DC car charger/adapter.

The manufacturer designed it this way so that the mini-USB chargers or AC wall chargers will not be overworked in trying to light up the large backlight.

By the way, the Nuvi 5000 has no internal battery. Probably because the backlight would not allow the battery last very long.
